King: McNabb Not Playing in Week 3
During the post-game show on NBC last night, Peter King reported that Donovan McNabb would not be starting this week against the Chiefs. He said Kevin Kolb is expected to get the start, and Michael Vick will “get a 10 play package.”
While we’re sure King has some sort of source for this, we find it highly unlikely that any determination has been made yet. The amount of necessary recovery on this injury isn’t easy to predict, and if Donovan is capable of practicing late this week he could certainly play — even if letting him rest through the bye week makes a lot of sense.
It has been 8 days since the injury now.
Next Week
An Eagles’ win today might actually increase the chances that McNabb misses week 3 — it would give the Eagles more leeway to let him get some rest.
Anyway, Go Birds!
Reports: It will be Kolb
There are several reports out this morning stating that it is now a certainty that Kevin Kolb will get his first NFL start today against the Saints.
Eagles Week 2 Report - Friday
UPDATE: Bit of a shocker here — Max Jean-Gilles is starting instead of a healthy Stacy Andrews. Andrews was very unimpressive last week and says he needs to work with Juan Castillo on the pass sets.
Several players missed practice again today: Donovan McNabb, Joe Mays, and Quentin Demps. Victor Abiamiri was seen with ice wrapped around his thigh. Not a good sign for the young DE’s availability come Sunday.
Kevin Kolb continued to practice with the first team. Final injury report due out later today, expect McNabb, Mays, Demps to all be doubtful.
Eagles Week 2 Report - Thursday
Donovan McNabb observed practice again today (albeit briefly). He continues to undergo treatment.
Joe Mays and Quentin Demps both missed practice again. Their status looks to be doubtful for Sunday.
Victor Abiamiri left practice with some sort of injury that appeared mild (he walked off without any noticeable limp).
McNabb Not Practicing Today
No real surprising news from Andy Reid today. Kevin Kolb will still be the starter if McNabb can’t play, and Donovan is still undergoing treatment but is unable to practice.
More Roster Moves — Baskett is Gone
The Eagles have announced that Hank Baskett has been released. The move was made so that Michael Vick could be added to the active roster. Vick may now being practicing with the team.
The Roster Question is Answered
The Big Kid has been moved to IR. Will he ever play for the Eagles again?
That is an open question. Clearly the guy has more than his physical issues (which are not minor) to deal with.
The organization still has him under contract for several seasons ahead. Although they may be reluctant to see him playing in another uniform, the headaches from constantly dealing with his issues may be enough for Reid, Heckert, and Banner to let him go this winter.
What To Do With the Roster
It’s become clear that the Eagles are still trying feverishly to trade a wide receiver before they are forced to cut them to make room for Garcia. And with the apparent lack of interest in Reggie Brown, it appears Hank Baskett will be that guy.
The Eagles may be trying to move Baskett — not because they feel Brown is better for the team (although that could be true) — but because Baskett is the one that could return them something.
Any team interested in Baskett will have to ask themselves if they are willing to gamble that the Birds would end up dumping Baskett in the end — or if they would instead let go of Brown.
Should be an interesting couple of days.
Eagles Sign Jeff Garcia
He will backup Kevin Kolb if McNabb can’t play this weekend — and although that’s the “official” line, signing of a guy like Garcia might not speak highly of the Birds’ faith in Kolb.
