Eagles Release Parrish

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Aug 09 2009

Back in June we mentioned the Eagles signing of Ken Parrish, a punter.  He performed well in spring workouts for the Birds, and if he had carried it into training camp he could have put some pressure on Sav Rocca.

He didn’t.  The Eagles cut him yesterday.  So Sav will finish camp without the pressure of having to look behind him.

Injuries Piling Up

Cornelius Ingram has a torn ACL.  Same knee that he injured in college.  The Eagles immediately signed free agent TE Rob Myers out of Utah State.

DeSean Jackson hyperextended his right knee.  He is upbeat, but will likely miss a couple of days at least.

Maclin’s Work

A bit of an update on Jeremy Maclin’s camp.  So far he’s been almost exclusively working on the outside — not in the slot.  It will be interesting to see if this remains the case.  If so, it’s an indication that he’s not going to be contributing right away — if that was even possible anymore — with starters Kevin Curtis and DeSean Jackson embedded in their roles.

Derrick Burgess

The Patriots acquired former Eagle Derrick Burgess today from the Raiders.  Burgess has really developed into a hell of a pass rusher, despite the fact that no one ever speaks of him because he was employed by the Raiders.

As it turns out, the Eagles were trying to get him back as well.

The Eagles were offering a third round pick and a player, per Adam Schefter.  Apparently the Patriots offer of a third round pick and a fifth round pick appealed to the Raiders a bit more.

It would have been a hell of a pickup on an already deeply talented defensive line.

Shawn Andrews — Reason to Panic?

Does the phrase “your 2009 starting right tackle, Winston Justice!” scare you?  Are you concerned about Shawn Andrews’ situation yet?

You probably should be.  Andrews continues to completely sit out practices, not even making it onto the field for any rehab work.  The situation was made worse when the team took a bus ride to Flight Night!, and Andrews back injury was aggravated.

This, during an off-season when the o-line was overhauled rather severely, and the verb “gel” was used so heavily to describe what this group must do before the season begins.

Given Andrews’ recent past, there’s good reason to worry about the right tackle position, and his future in general.

How many games will Shawn Andrews play in this season?

Camp Update: Wednesday, August 5

Jeremy Maclin is practicing this morning.

Cornelius Ingram is not — he is on the sidelines, in shorts, observing.  No word on what is wrong with him.

DeSean Jackson continues to look like he’s ready for September 13th.

Head coach Andy Reid realizes that his defense is getting tired and is vocal in trying to pump them up to keep fighting. “I know you’re getting tired of chasing No. 10,” Reid said.

And in a non-Eagle footnote, Eli Manning is now the highest paid player in the NFL.

The Eagles signed former first round DE Jason Babin to a one year deal.  Babin has been a bust in five seasons in the NFL.

To make room on their roster for the influx of new guys, the Eagles cut CB Courtney Robinson, WR Marcus Thigpen, and DT Jervonte Jackson (Jamaal’s brother).

Eagles Sign Veteran Linebacker

Taking quick action to address linebacker depth after Stewart Bradley’s injury, the Eagles signed former Charger linebacker Matt Wilhelm to a one-year deal.

Wilhelm is tall (6′4″) like Bradley, and has had some productive seasons in San Diego.  He could immediately challenge for playing time, if he is in shape and can learn the defense quickly.  He was part of a 3-4 scheme with the Chargers.

Maclin Finally Signs

The Eagles were finally able to get their first round pick to agree to contract terms late last night.  Maclin signed a five-year deal worth a total of $15.5 million dollars, $9.5 million of that guaranteed.

Last season’s #19 pick (Jeff Otah), signed a five-year deal worth a total of $14.4 million, with a little under $9 million guaranteed.  It’s unclear what transpired last night to finally get Maclin to sign, as it was believed all along the Eagles were offering last season’s #19 value plus a standard increase — which is exactly what Maclin ended up getting.

Maclin will be at camp today.

Asante Samuel is practicing again, and apparently looks completely healthy.

Joe Mays played MLB with the first team most of the time.  Omar Gaither was part of the two LB, nickel package (with Jordan).

Brian Westbrook and Shawn Andrews did not come out onto the field today.
