Not a Good First Day
Abiamiri out for several weeks.
Maclin doesn’t report.
Is your buzz killed?
Jim Johnson Update
Today Bob Brookover writes that Jim Johnson will not be involved with coaching duties at training camp (3 days away!). Sean McDermott appears poised to takeover as the new Eagles defensive coordinator in 2009. We, along with the rest of the Eagles faithful, continue to pull for JJ to have a full recovery.
Meanwhile, Joe Banner states that he’s happy with the backfield situation heading into camp. Even with Westbrook’s apparent gimpiness, Banner had this to say:
“We’re a little inexperienced, but at this point at running back we think we have some real quality people there,” Eagles president Joe Banner said today. “We expect that we’re going to go into camp and the guys we have are going to put us in a good position to be successful. Running back is one of those positions where younger players can step in and have success.”
We tend to agree. If you are going to have success at the running back position, you are much more likely to do it before you turn 30. The Eagles are better off giving several young guys a shot.
Prepping for Camp

Inqy writer Jeff McLane has a nice piece today about the upcoming battle for the starting free safety job. It includes some fun quotes from both Demps and Jones, it’s worth a read.
While that competition may be the one most up for grabs, it certainly isn’t the only one at camp. We are all excited to see Jeremy Maclin in action, who will be battling with Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, and Reggie Brown for the complimentary wide receiver jobs.
Victor Abiamiri and Juqua Parker will battle for the end position opposite Trent Cole. And it will still be interesting to see how Darren Howard looks as well.
Brent Celek has apparently put on some serious weight, and we’ll get to see him blocking and catching passes with the very impressive looking rookie from Florida, Cornelius Ingram.
10 Days…
I just renewed our Sunday Ticket package. It’s almost here.
Veteran Running Back, McNabb’s Future
According to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, Andy Reid is not going to rule out adding a veteran running back before training camp begins. To temper this sort of “rumor”, Andy Reid will rarely rule out anything of this nature. Speaking in absolutes takes away your flexibility.
Candidates would be free agents Warrick Dunn and Michael Pittman, both of whom have been productive players.
Also in Bell’s article, McNabb unsurprisingly states that his career will not be over when his current contract runs out. Whether he plays in Philadelphia in 2011 is a question no one can answer right now. Kevin Kolb’s contract also expires in 2010.
Eagles Made Offer to Brinkley
Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley, recently shot while picking up his sister from work, was offered a contract by the Philadelphia Eagles. Brinkley was undrafted and ended up signing with San Diego (according to his agent, the only other team to make him an offer).
Brinkley was a standout in his final season at Syracuse, rushing for over 1100 yards and nearly 5 ypc.
He is expected to survive, though his fledgling NFL career is in serious jeopardy
Training Camp, Court Dates, Knee Injuries
If you don’t already have this date marked on your calendar, the Eagles will have their rookies report to training camp at Lehigh on July 26. Veterans report the 29th.
For anyone planning on attending, here’s the autograph schedule.
Eagletarian spoke with Cornelius Ingram, who is confident in his surgically repaired knee. Expectations are exceptionally high for the fifth-round pick (and the entire offense), so this is good news.
Jack Ikegwuonu may soon have a shady piece of his past behind him.
