Eagles Defensive Captain: Who Would You Pick?
It’s June and we’re all dying for Eagles news. But we’re still weeks away from anyone reporting to Lehigh.
So for all of us still lurking around here on a daily basis, let’s get some discussion going. We’ll start it off this way:
Last season, the Eagles were one of four teams who did not appoint permanent captains. Please correct us if we’re wrong, but Andy Reid said his “captains” would be appointed on a weekly basis.
Perhaps that tradition continues this year, but for our discussion let’s assume the big fella changes his mind. Who should get the big “C” on his jersey on the defensive side? With Dawkins gone, there’s no easy choice.
Personally, we’d select Trent Cole. No one works harder than him. He’s a guy who came into the league and had to bust his tail to ever see the field. He’s a veteran who is always on the field.
But there are other choices. Stewart Bradley is an obvious one. His position is a natural choice to be leader of the defense. Asante Samuel may have taken himself out of the running by choosing not to show up for some OTA’s. Sheldon Brown — well, that could be messy.
Who would you pick? And please, feel free to elaborate in the comments.

thats a tough one. my first thought was trent cole. along with the points you’ve already made about him, i would add that he is a beast, meaning that he will always lead by example. he makes plays, gets to the qb what seems like routinely. but then i started thinking about quintin mikell he’s been there for something like 7 or 8 years already, and he’s playing in a position where he has learned from dawkins over those years and something has had to have rubbed off on him. he is also a very solid player that the younger players can learn from and he’s been there long enough to have the trust of the older veterans as well as the coaching staff (same as cole) it seems. i’d say its basically a toss up between those two… september isnt too far away but it still needs to hurry up.
i like bradley.i think it would be good for his development to know he has the trust of his coaching staff and teamates.i expect a breakout season from him.as well as abiamiri and demps.but whoever it is they need to be a vocal leader i dont know who that would be.
no way sheldon or asante
i voted stew, gotta love him
i like trent too, but i think Q deserves it just as much for trent for your own reasons. he was undrafted out of boise state i believe and entering the prime of his career hes playing very well, keeps a cool head
i like q too.but i wouldnt be so quick to say no way asante,he would be my second choice.i read on philly.com probably a month or so ago that he was picking up where 20 left off as far as leadership.and wasnt his ota absence for family issues or something like that?but i still say bradley.i do agree w/ no way sheldon though.he has a uphill battle on his hands to get back in the good graces of the fans and front office.
doesnt only defensive capt. get earpiece i helmet.that would be another argument for bradley due to his position on the field.
Re: Asante Samuel
I read same thing, and was initially tricked as you.
When they say hes talking more ,its more of ttrash talking to keepa competitive atmospher. not that i believe thats bad, because its most likely benefical, but its completely different from what 20 did
leadership isn’t really sill related. if it were, asante would be the leading canidate. its character and work ethic related IMO, something guys like stew and Q opitimize
