Rumor: Eagles’ Chance of Signing Weaver Very Slight

This entry was posted on Mar 16 2009

A quiet weekend for this site, as both some server tweaks and a violent laptop death left us scrambling.  Fortunately, the Eagles weren’t up to much either.

As we check in this morning, there is a report from Bob Brookover that the Eagles are not likely to be signing Leonard Weaver after all.

There were indications yesterday that free-agent fullback Leonard Weaver will be playing somewhere other than Philadelphia next season.

A league source said that the Eagles had not had contact with Weaver’s agent, Harold Lewis, for several days. The source indicated that Weaver might re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks or go to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Eagles have upwards of $40 million in cap space and a less than satisfactory existing solution at fullback.

Update:  Here’s a report from ProFootballWeekly yesterday:

As the second wave of free agency takes form, it appears that the Eagles and Vikings — who essentially run the same offense — are among the top teams interested in Seahawks FB Leonard Weaver.

  1. Smoke screen! Did we actually think the eagles would buck up and pay the cash for this guy. They will go back to trying to run the ball again, with this guy we could have had a legidatmite run game. But what did we really expect anyway.

  2. The Eagles NEED to get that dude on a plane and in the Nova Care complex and then not let him out. It seems to me that if they’d offer him $2M a year, with a lot of incentive barriers to getting it all both parties could potentially get what they want. It sounds like he wants $2.4+ and no fullback gets that so it’s a ploy to get more than $1M. He would probably be more than happy with $2M a year for 3 years even if he has to perform crazy to earn it all. The Eagles need to get off their high horse…this is the only offensive play maker available at this point that they wouldn’t have to hope that a complicated trade deal works out for.
