Eagles Rumors: Targeting Jason Peters?
John Clayton was on ESPN’s Mike & Mike show this morning and stated that he believes the Eagles have stockpiled draft picks and cash to attempt to acquire several players through trade.
He said he believes they are targeting the Bills LT Jason Peters, a talented but disgruntled player who wants a new contract.
With the departure of Tra Thomas all we can do is speculate at what the Eagles plan to do at Left Tackle. Currently the Eagles’ website depth chart puts Winston Justice (!!!) as the starter.
We have our doubts that Peters can be had from the Bills. Aside from acquiring TO, it is a team that has shed a lot of talent already this off-season, and will want to retain the valuable Peters for a run at the playoffs in 2009 to make the TO experiment pay off.
Nonetheless, we’ll keep our eyes on this one.
Thanks to reader JSimms for passing this along.

I guess the thing that disturbs me is that everyone’s assumption is that the Eagles are stockpiling picks to make trades, but what advantage is there to waiting all the way up until the day of the draft? They can’t complete one trade now so that if things, for whatever reason, don’t work out they aren’t stuck picking 12 rookie players or trying to give picks away?
I don’t think the Eagles are stockpiling to make trades. I understand Clayton’s logic and why he thinks that must be the case, but I don’t agree after watching this organization work over the last decade.
One, there simply aren’t that many trades to be had, no matter what Clayton says. Even when a player is disgruntled and the media is frothing, a player rarely ends up being traded.
There is no way the Bills will let Peters go, at least this year (after they lost Dockery and Royal). I’m actually on the opposite side of most fans in that I believe the Eagles are setting up the team nicely right now. With Sean Jones coming in (allowing Mikell to go back to FS), we’ve shored up the young defense. The moves I would make next in free agency would be signing Leonard Weaver, which helps in blocking AND run game, and then signing Torry Holt next week when he’s cut to help Desean Jackson progress (Holt still has 2 good years left). Then in the draft, we go OL/RB in the 1st round of the draft, shoring up our O-Line (I think T-H can play left tackle if we have a 1st round talent at his left guard spot to help) and a backup/replacement to Westbrook, corner/safety/returner in the 2nd round, which gives depth there, find some rogue gem of a TE from a small school in Idaho in the 3rd round who can block and catch a bit w/ Celek, and add depth depth depth in the later rounds. Having four 5th round picks allows us to couple our 2nd and 3rds and 4ths and move up to get guys.
PS… Aside from my wanting Holt on the Eagles, I do desire Kenny Britt… but I don’t think we get him.
I would hardly call Dockery and Royal “talent.”
Jabari greer? crowell?
They all may not be pro bowlers, but it’s a big deal to lose several nfl starters.
As a Buffalo fan, I can confirm that cutting Dockery and Royal has indeed improved our chances in the upcoming year. Even if we were to fill those positions with the wind up monkeys that bang their little toy cymbals together, it’s a push.
Losing Greer hurts, since he was probably our best man coverage DB, but we’ve got McKelvin at CB to start opposite McGee. Don’t be so sure Crowell won’t be a Bill. It looks like a deal with the Bucs fell through.
And be prepared to pay out the nose if you want to trade for our 2-time Pro Bowl LT who is under contract for the next 2 years, disgruntled or not.
