Eagles Rumors and Free Agency: Who’s Left
The mad dash of free agency is now officially behind us. What we are left with are the old, the less-talented, and maybe, maybe — a few bargains.
Most Eagles rumors floating around are trade speculation, but let’s take a look at who’s left in the free agent market at a few key positions and whether they make sense for the team in 2009.
Wide Receivers:
We had previously covered the Laveranues Coles rumors as they stood at the time with the Dolphins. The Dolphins ended up informing his agent not to even bother inquiring with them. Ouch. Coles is 31, coming off a 70 catch/7 TD season, but isn’t going to be getting any better as he ages. (Update: 4:20 — Well, so much for that. Coles just signed with the Bengals).
Amani Toomer is an interesting name. He’s never been a speed guy but looked even slower than usual last season. Still, he’s a reliable and tall target over the middle.
You know everything you need to about Marvin Harrison. The Colts said nice things about him as they kicked him out the door, but the guy looked terrible last year. Whether or not you believe he’s capable of putting it together for one more great year it’s clear the front offices around the NFL are skeptical.

Finally, there’s a guy out there who has battled injuries throughout his career but he’s a big body and has shown the ability to be a real playmaker when healthy: Ronald Curry. He was just released by the Raiders as part of their massive purge, and because of injury history he can likely be had on the cheap. An interesting name.
RB/FB
Heath Evans, Leonard Weaver, Terrelle Smith, and the ancient Lorenzo Neal are all still available at the fullback position and could be useful for the Eagles, yet we’ve heard nothing on the fullback front for the Eagles.
Kevin Jones could likely be had for depth at the running back position. He’s a guy with experience as a starter and has always had the talent.
Safety
Former Browns safety Mike Adams is a young guy who can play free safety and would be a relatively inexpensive solution for depth at the safety spot, if the Eagles truly feel that Demps might not be ready for primetime. Rumor has it the Patriots are sniffing around him.
The biggest name left is Jermaine Phillips. He will likely demand big dollars, but he’s worth it.
One former division rival left here is still James Butler, but their hasn’t been a single Eagles rumor related to him, and he appears on the verge of signing with St. Louis.
That’s a wrap for now. Is there anyone you’d like to see on our list? Is there an Eagles rumor we’ve missed? Let us know.
