Analyzing the Torry Holt & Eagles Rumors

Torry Holt to Eagles

As we continue to read and hear the rumors that the St. Louis Rams are willing (even desire) to move the veteran wide receiver, we want to take a look at the details of the situation.

Holt’s current contract.
His base salary in 2009 in a little over $6.5 million.  This is the last year of his deal.
He is due a $1.5 million roster bonus in the middle of March (yes, this month).

The Rams are unlikely to give him a new deal.  It makes no sense for a club that has no near-term SB hopes to retain a veteran like Holt if it means a new deal.  That means if the Rams can’t find a trade partner for him, it’s reasonable to conclude they will cut him sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Any team that trades for Holt will have to negotiate a new deal for him.  This will likely include a significant, but not overwhelming, guaranteed commitment over the first couple of years.

With all of this taken into consideration, a team could probably get Holt from the Rams for limited value — a middle round pick would probably do it.

The Eagles easily have the resources to make this happen (cap space, cash, tradeable parts).  The question then becomes how they value Holt.  Does he still have “it” at his age?  What would his inclusion in the offense mean for the rest of the receivers — for example, would it have a negative impact on Desean Jackson’s development?

We’ll keep you updated.  And as always, if you have any comments or tips for us, please send them to rumors@eaglesrumors.com.
